Freshman Mentor Application (1)
What is a Mentor? A mentor is a person who befriends a younger person (a “mentee”) and who helps him/her become familiar with the high school. Mentors spend time building a relationship with their mentees and they offer guidance and support. A high school mentor might help a freshman by sharing ways that he or she adjusted to a block schedule; or by giving advice about a particular class. He or she will occasionally have lunch with the freshman, say “hi” in the hallway or introduce his or her friends.
What skills does a Mentor need?
- Empathy
- Active listening
- Willingness to lead others in FUN activities and discussions
- Openness to diverse ideas and personalities
- Respect (even if you don’t feel like being respectful J)
- Enthusiasm
- Organization
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to meet deadlines and to follow through
What is expected of a Mentor?
The decision to become a mentor involves committing your time and skills to developing and maintaining a supportive relationship with your freshman student (s). If you are selected to become a freshman mentor, the following expectations must be met:
- Complete a mandatory mentor training program with Ms. Korza (June 18th)
- Participate in a ½ day freshman orientation day in August (August 25th)
- Establish caring, fun relationships with your freshmen
- Conduct monthly small group meetings/activities with freshmen during TNT time
- Weekly meeting time (TNT) with Ms. Korza for skill and activity review
- Sometimes, you will be asked to meet individually with your student if she/he has a particular concern
